cislyn: (just a girl in the world...)
Today's a quiet day. Todd's sick (been sick since Friday, actually, when he lost his voice, and still hasn't found it) and I'm fighting off his yick. Conversation between us consists of gestures, grunts, hugs, and the occassional instant message across the office. I went by blockbuster (twice actually) and got some movies for us, and if I can remember all of them it will be some kind of miracle.

Let's see... The Weathering Continent - animated odd little fantasy. Um.... there was more. Ah! The Emperor and the Assassin. A really really good (really really long) period Chinese movie. Also something about Lady Ninjas (which was pretty silly and Japanese), a moderately ok horror Slash and a really awful horror Scarecrow Slayer. I think there were more, but that's all I can remember for now. We also watched some bugs bunny on tape and Nightmare Before Christmas (yet another I need to get on DVD one of these days).

I started reading On the Street Where you Live by Mary Higgins Clark, and finished it this morning. It was predictable and clumsy and formulaic and all around about what I'd expect from this author. Why did I read it, then? Well, it was around, I hadn't read it yet, I knew it would be quick, and I'm always hoping to be surprised. In addition, I'm always interested to try to understand what makes some books sell. This book was not horrible, mind you. It just wasn't good. But I'm sure it sold (this one I got for free from a book swap, for the record). Why? The story itself was fast-paced enough. It developed quickly. I kept reading after all. ~shrugs~ I don't know. And hell, I still enjoyed it better than The Crying of Lot 49 which I'm still struggling through, and that's allegedly a classic, so there ya go.

I was thinking last night about my ideal dream job. I've never really been able to settle on one, and that's always bugged me and seemed sad. But last night I thought I might have hit on it... at the publishing houses there's someone, some really junior editor who's stuck sorting and sifting and reading reading reading through the slush piles of submitted stories, right? Oh man. ~drools~ If it was at Tor or something where it's mainly fantasy and sci-fi stuff? I'm getting all dreamy just thinking about it. I don't care what you'd pay me (though I would, actually, like to get paid - I'd just settle for a minor pittance (~bites tongue about current salary~)). I am so there. Slush reading for hire. Will read for food. Can discern crap from non-crap. No experience, except in reading a lot and reading quickly (with good retention rate!). I'd rather do that than play video games for a living (though that is my second choice, probably). I am, I think, a lazy bum.

This lazy bum needs to go check the laundry and clean the kitchen and things. Bah.

What's your ideal dream job?
