I just realized that I forgot to post a wallpaper of the week (installment #3) on Saturday. Yeesh, I can't even stick to a schedule I set for myself... anyhow, I'm making up for it with something a little different.
Instead of digital art, here are two images of art from the universe.
the bubble nebulaNGC 3603Both of these images were taken with the Hubble Telescope, which, because Bush is so keen to go to Mars, may be allowed to fall into disrepair and die. This would be a horrible shame, as the telescope has produced stunning images of the world beyond our horizons and been a great boon to science. This would be a horrible shame for a number of reasons, really, but those are the two biggies. (Although, to be fair, the missions to service the telescope aren't
just being cut because the budget is all wonky because of Bush and the moon. The missions to service the telescope are being cut because, to quote
this article: "Experts called for a far more conservative use of the space shuttle after the loss of seven astronauts aboard the Columbia last year. President Bush's plan for a crewed mission to Mars also calls for the retirement of the shuttle fleet, so NASA is using the spacecraft only to meet its obligations to the International Space Station. The Hubble is too far out of range for emergency evacuations to the space station should it encounter problems." So, in the world of politics at least, it's safer to go to Mars than to service the telescope which is only a few hundred miles away... interesting, that). Anyhow, these are pretty, they're out there, and we can see them thanks to Hubble. I'll get off my soapbox now. Enjoy 'em.
